You will learn how to:

• Regularly inspect vessels to ensure security measures
• Ensure maintenance, supervisions of implementation of the SSP/VSP and amendments to the SSP/VSP
• Ensure handling and coordination of cargo, vessel stores and bunkers are compliant
• Propose modifications to the SSP/VSP to the CSO
• Ensure problems identified in audits and inspections get reported to the CSO and that corrective actions are implemented promptly
• Ensure security awareness and vigilance on the vessel
• Ensure adequate security training for vessel personnel
• Ensure reporting and recording of security incidents
• Ensure coordinated implementation of the SSP/VSP with the CSO and Facility Security Officer (FSO) when applicable
• Ensure security equipment is properly operated, tested, calibrated and maintained
• Ensure consistency between security requirements and proper treatment of vessel personnel affected by the requirements
• Ensure TWIC programs are in place and implemented appropriately
• Advise the level of threats likely to be encountered by the ship, using appropriate security assessments and other relevant information
• Ensure that ship security assessments (SSAs) are carried out
• Ensure the development, submission for approval, implementation and maintenance of the ship security plan (SSP or VSP)
• Ensure ship security plan is modified as appropriate to correct deficiencies and satisfy security requirements of the vessel
• Arrange for internal audits and reviews of security activities
• Arrange for initial and subsequent verifications of the ship by the Administration or recognized security organization
• Ensure that the deficiencies and non-conformities identified during internal audits, periodic reviews, security inspections and verifications of compliance are promptly addressed and dealt with
• Enhance security awareness and vigilance
• Ensure adequate training for personnel responsible for ship security
• Ensure effective communication and cooperation between VSO and relevant FSO
• Ensure consistency between security requirements and safety requirements
• Ensure the plan for each ship reflects ship-specific information accurately when using sister-ship or fleet security plans
• Ensure alternative or equivalent arrangements approved for a ship or group of ships are implemented and maintained
